Stamford Gala To Benefit Yerwood Teen Center

The Stamford alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity invites area residents, friends of the Yerwood Center and supporters of positive youth development to party with them on New Year’s Eve at the downtown Stamford Marriott. Proceeds from the gala black-tie celebration will benefit Yerwood’s Teen Center.

“We want to celebrate our community,” said fraternity member Jamar Greene at a recent press conference announcing the teen center’s formation. Greene, a sixth-grade teacher at Cloonan Middle School, said the Kappas would be among groups and individuals bringing enrichment programs to the center.

The event will be co-hosted by FSC Foundation, a local community service organization. Doors open at 8 p.m.

The benefit could provide a big chunk of the $150,000 Yerwood is seeking to launch and sustain the teen center. A similar event last year brought in more than $50,000 for the Stamford Boys & Girls Club.

The teen center will consolidate activities for and dedicate specific hours to community youth ages 13 to 18, said Eugene Campbell, executive director of the Yerwood Center.

“We try to create an environment where our students are valued,” said Osby McMillan Jr., chair of the board of directors, “but they’re also challenged to be the best they can be.”

In addition to financial support, he said, the teen center also needs volunteers, consultants and sponsors.

“So there are four ways to support,” he said.

Tickets for the New Year’s Eve event are $100 per person in advance, $150 per couple in advance. For more information, contact Campbell at (203) 327 2790, ext 16.
