Stamford Fire Captain's Name Joins National Wall

STAMFORD, Conn. – Former Stamford Fire Capt. Daniel Chichester, who died Aug. 23, 2010, from “job-related cancer,” will be memorialized and have his name added to the International Association of Fire Fighters Memorial wall in Colorado Springs on Saturday.

“It was not only his vocation but his passion that he passed on to two sons who today are Stamford Professional Fire Fighters and hundreds of other firefighters that he mentored over the years,” Brendan Keatley, president of the Stamford Professional Firefighters Association, said in a statement. “It is very fitting that his name be forever etched among the heroes of American Firefighting at the national memorial.”

Chichester spent most of his life in Stamford, graduating from Stamford High School in 1959. He joined Stamford Fire and Rescue in 1973 and became captain in 1984. He ended his 38-year career with the department by training recruits and passing his knowledge down to the future firefighters.

The Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial was created in 1976 to honor past and future firefighters and emergency medical personnel. The first wall was erected in 1989, and a second on Sept. 15, 2001 and contains the names of 2,410 firefighters, including the 343 from the Fire Department of New York who died on Sept. 11, the statement said.

Chichester’s family will be at the memorial service and will be accompanied by Keatley and other members of Stamford Fire and Rescue. Fallen firefighters have been honored at the memorial every September for the past 25 years, the statement said.
