Stamford Finance Candidates Show Party Loyalty

STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford’s finance board hopefuls turned Tuesday night’s candidates’ forum into the blame game regarding the city’s recent fiscal problems. The Republicans criticized Democrats, and Democrats condemned Republicans.

Joseph Tarzia, a Republican candidate and former finance board chairman, held the Board of Representatives at least partially responsible for underfunded city pensions because it gave non-union members increased benefits in fall 2008. He also made sure everyone knew that the president of the Board of Representatives at that time was one of his opponents, David Martin.

“This is when the world was falling apart,” Tarzia said, reminding everyone that the country’s economic troubles coincided with the raise. When Martin had his opportunity to speak, he did not respond to Tarzia’s claim but said the city pensions are nearly fully funded.

After several accusations from Tarzia and Republican incumbent Bob Kolenberg, Democrat incumbent Mary Lou Rinaldi fired back. She named several of the problems her opponents blamed on Democrats, such as a lack of auditing of the city’s expenses. Rinaldi said the two also served on the board’s Audit Committee and had the opportunity to do something.

“These things happened under their watch, too,” Rinaldi said of problems facing the city.

Democrats Martin, Rinaldi and John Louizos also accused Republicans of causing dysfunction, hurting the city. Although Kolenberg agreed that his first two years on the board from 2003 to 2004 came with a lot of heated arguments. But it ultimately benefitted taxpayers, he said, with a 2 percent increase in taxes both years, compared with 15 percent the previous two.

All six candidates were at the forum: Martin, Tarzia, Rinaldi, Louizos, Kolenberg, Republican Scott Mirkin and Independent Cynthia Reeder. Voters can choose any of the three candidates to fill the open seats.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians and Senior Men’s Association of Stamford sponsored the forum, which was held in the Hibernians Hall. Election Day is Nov. 8.
