Stamford Fills Two Key City Positions

STAMFORD, Conn. — Two city positions were filled Wednesday when Mayor Michael Pavia appointed Ted Jankowski Sr. as director of public safety, health and welfare, and Antonio Conte as chief of Stamford Fire & Rescue. Conte had been acting chief.

Jankowski is retired from the Fire Department of New York. During his 23 years there, he served as chief of Battalion 17 in Queens and the Bronx and, most recently, as deputy chief, executive officer of Citywide Safety and Inspection Services Command.

“I am humbled to have the opportunity to work for such a great city and to work with departments that have such distinct and proud histories,” Jankowski said in a statement from Pavia’s office. “My commitment is to achieve the highest quality of services for public safety, health and welfare."

Brendan Keatley, president of the Stamford Professional Fire Fighter’s Association, said in a statement: “Stamford is a growing, thriving city and it is important that someone with big-city public safety experience was tapped to fill this very important post.”

Conte has served Stamford Fire & Rescue for nearly 40 years and was named acting chief in July when former Chief Robert McGrath left the post. During his time as acting chief, the second-generation Stamford firefighter led the city through Hurricane Irene and the devastating Christmas morning fire in Shippan.

“We appreciate and look forward to his continued strong leadership, creative energy, and dedicated commitment to the citizens of Stamford,” Pavia said of Conte.
