Stamford Dems Hope To Clean 'Financial House'

STAMFORD, Conn. — After being endorsed by the Stamford Democratic City Committee for an available seat on the Board of Finance in November’s election, David Martin compared the city’s economy to a house.

“We need to make sure our financial house is in order,” Martin said after the Stamford Democrats endorsed him. He said the Republicans on the board keep the house messy.

The Democrats also endorsed Mary Lou Rinaldi and John Louizos. Rinaldi currently sits on the board, and Louizos spent four years on it before losing his seat in the 2009 election.

Rinaldi described the past two years on the board as “not all that pleasant,” with each member sharing different ideas for what would be best for Stamford. In working with Martin and Louizos, Rinaldi felt confident they share a similar vision to invest in Stamford and can work together.

The only voting the Democrats did during their endorsement meeting was for the three seats on the Board of Education. Current board members Jackie Heftman and Julia Wade were endorsed along with Gary Klein.

The Democrats nominated five people for the six Board of Representative races this year. The nominees were Benjamin Velishka, who was appointed to the board in June, in District 2; Elise Coleman in District 3; James (Jay) Fountain in District 7; and Shella Merritt in District 9 will all run for re-election. And Joshua Brown will run in District 16. The District 13 nomination was left vacant.

The four endorsed candidates for constable are Phil Giordano, Gloria DePina, Ralph Serafino and Jon Gallup.
