Stamford Church Offers Service for the Grieving

The holiday season is a time of joy, relaxation and celebration. However, some people who have experienced profound loss and sadness may not be in a celebratory mood. This Sunday, Dec. 19, Stamford's Church of Christ the Healer will hold a special service for area residents who might find the holidays difficult. "Longest Night: Worship for Hope and Healing" will take place at 5 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

"Christmas is not the most wonderful time of the year for everyone," said the Rev. Kate Heichler, pastor of Christ the Healer. "The empty chair at the table, illness, unemployment, loneliness or alcoholism, people's reasons for sadness during the holidays can be many and varied. But Christians claim that God brings light into all darkness, which is the heart of the story we celebrate at this time of the year."

The service will include readings, music and the opportunities to light candles, receive prayers and participate in a "wiping the tears" ceremony, said Heichler. It is open to people of any faith or no faith. Also welcome are people who are not feeling a special loss but want to support others, she said.

"This service is not sad. It just gives some space for a full range of feelings, and celebrates God's love and presence with us no matter what is going on," Heichler said.

The church is located at 20 Brookdale Road at High Ridge Road. For more information, contact Heichler at 203-322-6991.
