Stamford Board of Reps Hopeful Runs for the Kids

STAMFORD, Conn. – Looking out his window on West Avenue, Francky Trofort sees teenagers and young adults not going to school, not working and shoplifting. This blight among young people in his community has led the Republican to run for a seat on Stamford’s Board of Representatives.

“It’s like they don’t see a future,” Trofort said. “Someone needs to step up and do something.”

Running for public office won’t be Trofort’s first attempt to help Stamford’s youth. Over the summer, the personal trainer started “Be Part of the Solution,” where he trains kids at Stamford’s YMCA. The program’s name is also his campaign slogan.

The Haitian-born Trofort feels he can relate to the young people in District 9 because he grew up in similar circumstances, not believing he had a future and having friends who hung out on the street, were in jail, and even dead. But he was able to stop thinking that way after getting involved with fitness and creating an identity for himself, and he believes he can help teens in his district find their own identities, too.

If elected, Trofort says, he will fight to save programs for kids and to secure funds to clean up his neighborhood and add parks and playgrounds. If that happens, he believes businesses will come to the area and residents will find jobs nearby.

“I am going to make sure I am the eyes and ears for these kids,” he said.

Trofort is running against Democratic incumbent Shella Merritt. The Daily Stamford is attempting to profile all of the candidates by Election Day, Nov. 8, so voters can make informed decisions.
