Protester Makes Statement About Gas Prices

Salvatore Galaz took to the street Tuesday afternoon to make his feelings known about the ever-raising price of gas. The Norwalk resident, who works as a pizza deliveryman, stood on High Ridge Road for several hours waving his sign at motorists.

“Somebody has to take a stand, even if it is one person,” he said.

Many drivers expressed their support for Galaz’ message by honking their horns and waving to him. However, High Ridge Shell — one of the gas stations near where Galaz stood — wanted him to leave. But Galaz made sure to stay on the public sidewalk where he was free to make his protest.

Galaz said he used to be in the marble flooring industry, but that due to the economy he now works as a delivery man for John the Baker in Stamford and has to pay for his own gas.

His main concern is not the gas prices themselves, he said, but the effect they have on the price of food, clothing and other necessities.

“I love this community, I want to stay,” he said explaining that financial woes have already forced him into foreclosure.

After several hours on High Ridge Road with his sign, Galaz left to go to work delivering pizza and lasagna. He said he was demonstrating on his own and not as part of a group or organization.
