Police Want Your Help Serving Stamford

Every year needy Stamford families receive food, clothing, toys and other assistance thanks to the efforts of the Stamford Police Department. And every spring the Stamford Police Association launches a fundraising drive so it can continue to provide help for the less fortunate.

“The message we want to continue to send to community youth and those who require some help and support in these difficult times is that Stamfordites give back and care,” said Sgt. Joseph Kennedy, president of the Stamford Police Association and head of the Stamford Police Youth Bureau.

The funds pay for a backpack giveaway in August, a turkey giveaway before Thanksgiving, winter coat donations, and participation in the Toys for Tots program, a press release said. Over 24,000 bicycle helmets have been given to Stamford children over the last 15 years.

The Police Athletic League also provides extracurricular activities for about 3,500 Stamford kids. The PAL sponsors teams in such sports and activities as baseball, girls softball, soccer, ice hockey, bowling and crafts.

“With all the budget cutbacks at federal and state level, private organizations like Stamford Police Association and our Police Athletic League must step forward with a larger presence to make a true life-long positive impact on the lives of youths within our community,” Kennedy said.

The fundraising effort ends in mid-December. Donations can be made on the Website of the Stamford Police Association.
