Stamford Mayor Michael A. Pavia will hoist the Indian flag as part of the activities celebrating the 63rd anniversary of India's Independence Day Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd. A short entertainment program will follow.

The day will mark the birth of India as a democracy. The event is sponsored by the Connecticut Chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin. It is free and open to all members of the community.

According to a release, the Indian flag stands for courage and sacrifice and is considered not only a symbol of India's freedom but of freedom of people throughout the world as well. The flag consists of a tricolor design with equal proportions of dark green, white and saffron. The saffron represents sacrifice and courage, the white stands for truth, peace and purity, and the green is for fertility and faith.
