Old Town Hall Welcomes New Events

A grand entranceway, a sweeping staircase, an expansive main floor and a regal atmosphere: What more could one ask for in a recently renovated structure that stands as a historic attraction in the city of Stamford?

Occupants, Lenora Cavaliero, event coordinator for the city's Office of Economic Development, said as she points out available rental space in the beautifully refurbished Old Town Hall.

"They did so much renovation, millions of dollars worth, to bring it back to life," she said.

To maintain its life, operational costs need to be met. And to do that, space in the hall is being offered for public functions, including the Davenport Room, which seats 48; the Rippowam Room, which holds 35 seated or 75 standing occupants; and other areas.

Both nonprofit and for-profit groups are welcome to rent space. Nonprofits receive a preferred rate. The hall also is available for weddings and other special events.

"We want to make money," Cavaliero said. "We've got to keep this place going. We need renters."

Since 1988, when the building became vacant, attempts to refurbish it have started and stopped. Over the years, several entities, such as the Old Town Hall Redevelopment Agency led by Tim Curtin, and dedicated individuals mapped out plans for renovations and funding.

In 2004, a $3 million state Department of Economic and Community Development grant allowed foundational work to be done and a request for proposal was issued for an architect, construction manager Jeff Pardo said. Subsequently, a total of $6 million in federal tax credits was given for the project.

"To me, it's the most phenomenal place, and brilliant, and I just get a charge showing it to people," Cavaliero said.
