No Fireworks in Stamford, No Problem, Says Seller

STAMFORD, Conn. — People will be flocking to fireworks displays all over the country this weekend to celebrate Independence Day. And for the second year, no one will be coming to Stamford. But the cancellation of the city's fireworks has meant a boom in business for Tom Intrieri of Greenwich, who has two fireworks stands, one in Stamford and one in Greenwich.

“People love to buy fireworks,” he said while restocking a table at his Stamford location. This year and last year — when Stamford canceled its fireworks display — Intrieri’s stands in Stamford have seen an increase in sales, he said. But Intrieri says he does not understand how a large city such as Stamford can cancel its fireworks show.

“With the amount of money people pay in taxes, they should not be without fireworks,” he said.

For the second straight year, the city decided to cancel its fireworks because of budget constraints, Stamford Advocate reported. The show costs $100,000 to $150,000. The Advocate also quoted Mayor Michael Pavia as saying that local companies will sponsor the show next year.

Intrieri is not worried about business, now or in the future, knowing that people love the selection he offers. Although he has sold fireworks throughout Fairfield County in the past 11 years, this year Intrieri has two stands, one on High Ridge Road in Stamford and the other on East Putnam Avenue in Greenwich. The stands are identifiable by the giant air dancers at the location.
