New Grocery to Create Up to 500 Jobs

In a serving of good news in a bad economy, Fairway Market is hiring. The grocery store is taking applications for a job fair that will take place in Stamford on Wednesday. All applications will be reviewed and screened. Qualified candidates then will be invited to schedule an appointment for an interview.

The store's entry into the area will create 400 to 500 jobs in Stamford, said Jacqueline Donovan, head of marketing. The plan is for Fairway to open here by Thanksgiving, Donovan said.

"We're excited about coming into the community," she said, adding that Fairway tries to work directly with communities to staff its stores. Fairway has six grocery stores in New York and New Jersey.

The store seeks to staff a number of departments, including receiving, dairy, bakery, meat, frozen foods, coffee, cheese, sea food and deli. Available positions include front-end managers, cashiers, café workers, sandwich makers, pizza makers, cooks and prep cooks.

Applications are available at the Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd., Ferguson Library Main Branch at Broad and Bedford streets, and Ferguson Library South End Branch, 34 Woodland Ave. Applications also may be filled out online. All applications will be screened by CTE Inc.
