Maurice Ruggiero, Korean War Veteran

Maurice “Babe” Ruggiero died April 2 at the age of 80. Born in Stamford, Ruggiero attended Stamford High School before enlisting in the Army in 1949. He served in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart.

His family and friends will miss his intelligence, humor and fun-loving nature as well as his ability to fix everything, his food creations and his loving care of his family.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former June Pavia; four children, Deanna Zikias and her husband, Robert, Joseph Ruggiero, Andrea Santella and her husband, Tom, and Joanne Procaccini and her husband, Virgil; a sister, Emily Buzzeo; a brother, Martin Ruggiero, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated Saturday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 733 Oxford Road, Oxford. Relatives and friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St. in Newtown, on Friday, April 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be private.

The family is asking that donations be made in Ruggiero’s name to either the Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut or Catholic Relief Services
