STAMFORD, Conn. Several small-business owners in Stamford learned that they have more in common with Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Linda McMahon than they might have expected when the former chief executive officer of World Wrestling Entertainment shared a few of the hardships she went through before finding success.
Before building the wrestling company from a small business with a few employees into an international organization, McMahon and her husband, Vince, had owned three businesses, all of which went south, she said. In addition to having to file for bankruptcy, their home was auctioned off and their car was repossessed, she said.
We felt down, we felt embarrassed, but never defeated, McMahon said during her talk Monday at the Third Street Stamford Chapter of Business Networking Internationals meeting at Atria Senior Living facility.
The Greenwich resident also told the group how she became pregnant with her son, Shane, right before her college graduation, and how Vince had to work in a rock quarry about 90 hours a week. To do her part, she went to work as a secretary at a law firm six weeks after Shane was born, she said.
McMahon is vying for the Republican nomination for one of the states seats in the U.S. Senate against former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays. The winner of the nomination will most likely run against U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th District, to replace Independent Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who will be stepping down.
The Republican Party will be nominating its candidates for Novembers election at the 2012 Republican State Convention on Friday, May 18.
