Joan Reader, Stamford Portrait Artist

STAMFORD, Conn. – Portrait artist and lifelong Stamford resident Joan Reader died on Friday, Sept. 16.

A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, she received regional acclaim for her work, which was described as “carving out” a three-dimensional likeness on a two-dimensional piece of paper. She earned many awards for her work in charcoal and oil.

In addition to her art, Reader loved the outdoors and rode horses, swam and played tennis.

Reader is survived by her husband of 40 years, Norman Reader; her son, Paul Reader; her daughter, Janis Reader-Forgotson, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, Sept. 18, at Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home. Burial was in Stamford’s Beth El Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Reader’s memory be made to the Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan.
