Jack Rich, 85, Held Stamford Municipal Posts

Jack Rich, who was active in Stamford municipal affairs over a period of many decades, died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on May 20 at Seabury Retirement Community in Bloomfield. He was 85 years old. Born in Staten Island, Rich lived in Stamford for 50 years.

After settling in Stamford in 1954 with his wife, Betsy, Rich became involved in municipal and political affairs. He was elected to four terms on the Board of Representatives (1963-69), and two terms on the Board of Finance (1969-75). Rich was also appointed to several Mayoral Commissions and served on the Planning Board from 1997-2000.

His professional life was spent in New York City, where he worked for American Brake Shoe Company; Booz, Allen & Hamilton Consultants; Harper & Row PublishersInternational Paper Company, and North American Philips Corp. He retired in 1988.

In addition to his wife, survivors are his daughter, Cary Rich Jewkes and her husband, Ian; his son, Robert Gilbert Rich; two sisters, Elizabeth Gilbert Ferguson and Cary Rich Henry and her husband, G. Selden Henry; his brother, Peter Gilbert Rich and his wife, Linda Cooper Rich; four grandsons, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, William Alexander Rich and his wife, Sheila McNamara Rich.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at Old St. Andrew’s Church, 59 Tariffville Road, Bloomfield. Interment will take place at a later time in the Kent School Cemetery in Kent.
