Independents Endorse Two for Stamford Elections

STAMFORD, Conn. — When Stamford voters go to the polls this November, they will have two Independents to choose from as well. The Independent party endorsed Cynthia Reeder for the Board of Finance and Karen Murphy for the Board of Education.

Reeder, a 10-year Stamford resident, will be running against Democrats Mary Lou Rinaldi, John Louizos and David Martin as well as Republicans Joseph Tarzia, Bob Kolenberg and Scott Mirkin for three open spots on the Board of Finance. She works as a business consultant and financial writer and holds a master's of business administration degree in corporate finance.

“At a time when everyone is trying to do more with less, it is imperative that the city and the board ferret out wasteful spending, and habits, and adopt more cost-effective ways of delivering services to the residents of Stamford,” Reeder said in a statement.

Current finance board member and Independent Kathleen Murphy supported Reeder’s nomination. “Cynthia brings a fresh, nonpartisan mindset to the fiscal concerns facing Stamford, plus a high degree of commitment and professionalism,” Murphy said in the statement.

Karen Murphy will be running against Democrats Julia Wade, Jackie Heftman and Gary Klein as well as Republican Mike Bayonne Jr. for the three available Board of Education seats. She said she is running because of the long-term impact the board’s decisions have on the city and to set a direction for the schools going forward.

“She will be an unwavering ally of parents and taxpayers who are seeking transparency and accountability from the school board and superintendent,” Mike Telesca, State Agent of the Independent Party of Connecticut, said of Murphy’s nomination.

The Independent Party also cross-endorsed Republicans Tarzia and  Kolenberg for the Board of Finance.
