Housekeeper Pleads Guilty To Stealing $10,000 From Former Stamford Employer

STAMFORD, Conn. -- As he looked down at a housekeeper who pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing $10,000 from a former employer in Stamford two years ago, Superior Court Judge Gary White paused as he wondered how she was currently employed.

"I'm almost afraid to ask: Is she still working as a housekeeper?" White asked Sonia E. Godinez's lawyer Benjamin Aponte.

She is, White was told, and had already found $2,800 in restitution of the $10,125 she had stolen.

She pleaded guilty to second-degree larceny, and White warned her that while he was inclined to grant her accelerated rehabilitation if she stayed out of trouble in the next year. If she committed any further offenses or failed to pay restitution, she faced the possibility of 10 years in jail.

Accelerated rehabilitation is a program that allows a felony record to be expunged if the suspect successfully stays out of trouble for a year.

Godinez, 45, wrote 36 checks to herself from her employer's account.
