Grab Bus Or Call Uber: Metro-North Working On Tracks On New Canaan Branch

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Call for Uber, or be prepared to take the bus. Train service will be suspended and buses will be running instead starting Friday afternoon and all weekend on the New Canaan Branch, Metro-North announced.

The service change is scheduled for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 21 to allow for construction work on the grade crossings, the Department of Transportation said.

Substitute buses along the branch will stop at all stations from New Canaan to Stamford but will operate 15 to 20 minutes earlier than scheduled train times.

Local or express service will be offered, with specific destinations announced as passengers board the buses.

Substitute bus service will begin after 10 p.m. Fridays through the last train of the night on Sundays.

This summer weekend service change will help ensure the ongoing reliability and safety of New Canaan Branch trains. Metro-North work will include: replacing highway grade crossings at Largo Drive, Crescent Street, Glenbrook Road and Hoyt Street; cutting trees and brush along the line; welding track joints; and replacing worn rail.

If you want to skip the bus, Uber is swooping in to offer an alternative for commuters.

Uber is offering a deal for $10 off four weekend rides between New Canaan and Stamford from now until Aug. 21.

Ride from anywhere in New Canaan to the Stamford train station, and you’ll automatically get $10 off your ride —making your total fare less than what you’d pay for daily parking in Stamford. And same goes for the other way around — request a ride to New Canaan from the Stamford station and get $10 off your trip.

"We know that summer weekends are sacred, and so we hope to help make your travel plans as seamless and affordable as possible during this time of limited rail access," Uber said in a press release.

Here are the details of the deal:

  • Promotion is available every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through Aug. 21
  • Trips must be taken between the Stamford Metro-North train station and the Town of New Canaan for the promotion to apply.
  • $10 will automatically be deducted from your total fare if your ride fits the above criteria.
  • Each person is eligible to receive the $10 off promotion for up to four times from now through Aug. 21.

Several road in Stamford will be closed while Metro-North completes the work, including:

  • Crescent Street from Aug. 5 to 11; and
  • Hoyt Street in Darien from Aug. 12 to 18.

Roads will be closed to traffic beginning at 10 a.m. the Friday that the project begins. After the final train Friday, rail service will be suspended until 4 a.m. Monday. Paving will begin at 8 a.m. on the Monday of the project and will be complete, with the road being reopened by 4 p.m. Thursday.
