STAMFORD, Conn. Are you worried about your home flooding this weekend as Hurricane Irene makes its way to Stamford? Residents living around Stamford Harbor should be, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says.
The agency mapped the Hurricane Surge Inundation for the city, with the area around Stamford Harbor being the most at risk of flooding during a hurricane.
The agency also operates the Stamford Hurricane Barrier and at 10:40 a.m. posted on its Facebook Page that engineers will come to Stamford as early as Saturday evening to consider staffing and closing the barrier. The barrier will be checked until Tuesday, the post said.
The barrier extends from the West Branch towards the East Branch of Stamford Harbor, the barriers website said. It protects about 460 acres of the city, which includes residential areas, manufacturing plants and a main portion of the commercial district, it said.
Calls were made to Stamfords Citizens Service Center and Office of Operations about the citys preparations for coastal flooding, but were not answered.
