Finance Board Leads Stamford Races

STAMFORD, Conn. — Do you think Stamford spends too much? Are taxes too high? If so, voters will get a chance to make changes on Nov. 8 when half of the Board of Finance is elected.

Experience is at the forefront of the race, with the city’s Republican Party endorsing Bob Kolenberg’s bid for re-election, Joseph Tarzia’s return to the board and current member Scott Mirkin's first run for the board. He was added to the board in March after Tarzia stepped down.

Not to be outdone, the Democrats also have an experienced group running: current Vice Chair Mary Lou Rinaldi, former board member John Louizos — who lost a re-election bid in 2009 — and David Martin, a former Board of Representatives president and mayoral candidate.

Cynthia Reeder earned the state’s Independent party backing. The Independent Party also cross-endorsed Kolenberg and Tarzia’s runs.

The Board of Education race has Jackie Heftman and Julia Wade running for re-election for the Democrats. Also running are Democrat Gary Klein, Republican June Corridor, Republican Mike Bayonne Jr. and Independent Karen Murphy, who was cross-endorsed by the Republicans. There are three seats.

There will be six races for Board of Representative seats: Democrat Benjamin Velishka, who was appointed to the board in June, will run unopposed in District 2; Democrat Elise Coleman will be unopposed in District 3; Democrat James Fountain is unopposed in his re-election campaign in District 7; in District 9, Democrat Shella Merritt will have to defend her seat against Republican Francky Trofort; Republican Ralph Loglisci will be unopposed in District 13; and in District 16, Democrat Joshua Brown will challenge Republican Demetrios Frazis.

A few additions may be made to the races for the Board of Representative as Election Day 2011 approaches.
