Fairfield County Yankees Fans Head to Home Opener

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Rail riders were clad in navy blue, pinstripes and interlocking N.Y.s' as they left Fairfield County for the Bronx for Opening Day at Yankee Stadium Friday morning.

The train, which was standing room only by the time it reached Stamford from New Haven, was buzzing with sports talk — and not just with predictions for the game, but about local high school lacrosse and the Jets, among other topics.

Friday's game was special for David and Fabiola Goldbaum, of Stamford, as they were not only headed to their first opening day, but were also going to see Jorge Posada, former Yankee catcher who retired this past winter, throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

For Mike Brown and his sons, Alexander and Kieran, going to the home opener was all about beating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and improving the Yankees' chances at a playoff birth, which would be about six months away.

"It's the start of the road to the championship," Mike said, gaining the approval of the two boys.

"We're big Jorge fans," David said excitedly. They weren't alone as several "Hip, Hip Jorge" chants were started outside of the stadium before the game.
