Dr. Fred Sheftell, Stamford Psychiatrist

Stamford resident and psychiatrist Dr. Fred David Sheftell, who worked in the fields of substance abuse and headaches, died Monday after a four-year battle with cancer.

Sheftell’s achievements as a psychiatrist include founding the Drug Liberation Programs, one of the nation’s first substance abuse treatment centers. Sheftell, along with Dr. Alan Rapoport, started the New England Center for Headaches, and he was founder and director of the American Council of Headache Education. He also served as president of the American Headache Society and sat on the board of directors for over 20 years.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1941, he graduated from New York University and received his medical degree from New York Medical College. From 1970 to 1972, Sheftell served in the U.S. Army, where he started a drug abuse program for soldiers returning from Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; son Jason; daughter Lauren; mother Wilma; brother Steven and his family; and brothers-in-law Edward Rosenthal and wife Linda, and David Rosenthal and wife Jane.

Services will be held at noon Thursday at Temple Beth El, 350 Roxbury Road, Stamford. Arrangements were entrusted to Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home.
