The traffic shifts will mark the start of the improvements to the I-95 Exit 8 off-ramp to Atlantic Street as well as to South State Street from the Stamford Train Station to Canal Street in Stamford.
The project will provide the I-95 Exit 8 off-ramp additional operational lane capacity by moving the off-ramp between Atlantic Street and Canal Street. In addition, South State Street from the Stamford Station to Canal Street will undergo extensive drainage and sanitary sewer improvements, traffic signal upgrades, as well as the relocation of water, power and communication underground facilities.
As part of the drainage improvements, a box culvert will be installed at the intersection of Canal Street at Dock Street.
Closures and lane shits include:
- I-95 Northbound from the Rippowan River Bridge to the Exit 8 (Elm Street) on-ramp in Stamford will be shifted toward the median to allow for the placement of precast concrete barrier curb along the right shoulder.
- The first major phase of the project is to shift and reduce lanes on the Interstate 95 Exit 8 northbound off-ramp. The off-ramp lanes at Atlantic Street will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes.
- South State Street lanes will be reduced between Atlantic Street and Canal Street from four lanes to two lanes.
The contractor will be working on I-95 northbound Monday through Friday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and on Atlantic, South, and Canal Streets, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Variable message signs on I-95 and South State Street will be utilized to advise motorists of traffic conditions in the area.
