PORT CHESTER, N.Y. A Croton teen was killed and a Stamford teen seriously injured in a one-car crash Sunday night when their car went off the road along an Interstate 287 ramp in Port Chester, New York State Police said.
Margaret Radford, 17, of Croton-on-Hudson, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which was reported at 9:21 p.m. Radford was driving a silver convertible 1999 BMW 328i when it spun out of control on the ramp from I-287 to I-95 at Exit 22.
Celia Sprouse, of Stamford, Conn., was taken to Greenwich Hospital in serious condition with head injuries, police said. Extrication machinery, known as the jaws of life, was used to remove both occupants from the car. Investigator Shannon Morrison said the car was destroyed.
As of noon Monday, Sprouse was in serious but stable condition and was able to move her limbs and respond, police said. Morrison said it would be a couple of days before the extent of Sprousers injuries are known.
Morrison also said police are conducting a blood test to determine whether Radford was impaired at the time of the accident. He said it will take a couple of days before the test results are back.
According to independent witnesses cited in the report, Radford was traveling at a high rate of speed for wet road conditions when she spun out of control, went up a hill and the drivers side of the car struck a tree.
