Council Hopes Vigil Promotes Tolerance

The Rev. Kate Heichler believes challenging times call for bold actions. In light of recent controversies involving Muslim worship, this is one of those times, Heichler said.

"It's time to do something public and show solidarity and support" for the Muslim community, said Heichler, president of the InterFaith Council of Southwestern Connecticut and Pastor of the Church of Christ the Healer church in Stamford.

The organization is sponsoring a multifaith prayer vigil at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the grounds of First Congregational Church in Stamford. The public event is open to all, Heichler said.

She said she would like area residents of Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other faiths to come together to promote tolerance, she said, adding that the Interfaith Council extols "American values."

A reason for the vigil is the persistent protest against construction of a Muslim community center in New York City near the Sept. 11 terrorist attack site, she said.

"That's part of it, and the fact that it has picked up daily," she said

But incidents closer to home – local resistance to the building of a mosque in Norwalk and picketing of Bridgeport mosque by fundamentalist Christians – also concern her.

The First Congregational Church is at 1 Walton Place at Bedford Street. For more information, contact the Interfaith Council at (203) 348-2800.
