Celebrity Chef Helps Open Stamford Lunch Spot

STAMFORD, Conn. — Veterans Park was the place to be Thursday afternoon as the latest downtown lunch option, Melt Mobile, opened shop with an assist from celebrity chef Bobby Flay, who was taping his newest television show.

With television cameras rolling, Flay stood outside the Melt Mobile truck, delivering orders, serving free samples of soup, posing for pictures and signing autographs for people waiting in line. He even offered to pay for one woman’s lunch as she fumbled through her purse looking for money.

“Nobody else better try this,” Flay shouted to the 50 or so patrons as he handed over a few dollars.

Though Flay may have been a nice added treat, the food was well worth the 15-minute wait, many customers said.

“It’s delicious!” said Nick Didelot, his eyes widening as he took a bite of his sandwich. He added that he and his friends heard about Melt Mobile and wanted to check it out.

“We checked out the menu online and thought it was awesome,” Didelot said.

Alexis Myones of Pound Ridge, N.Y., was shopping with her daughter, Brooke, and both were surprised to find the truck and meet the Food Network star. “The sandwich is amazing, but that was awesome, too,” Myones said of talking to Flay.

Flay’s new television project is tentatively titled “The Bobby Flay Project.” It will feature people who have changed careers to get into the food industry, his website said. In addition to receiving publicity from the show, the people profiled will also benefit from Flay's culinary and business knowledge.

Melt Mobile will be in Veterans Park on Atlantic Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Darlene Anderson and Diana Hall's gourmet grilled cheese truck will also donate 2 percent of all proceeds to the Umbrella Club, a local charity that helps families and children in need.
