Bruce Ferguson, Born in Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – Bruce Lyons Ferguson, 84, died in his Louisville, Ky., home on Oct. 13 after a long battle with an illness. He was born on June 18, 1927, in Stamford.

At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After the war he began a long and successful career in the insurance industry, working for Royal Globe Insurance Company before becoming president of Stuyvesant Insurance Company in 1970. In 1976, he became president of Underwriters Safety and Claims, Inc., and worked there until his retirement in 1992.

He worked many years with the Boy Scouts and saw all of his sons become eagle scouts. He continued to serve as chairman of the Lincoln Heritage Council for many years, and was awarded the Silver Beaver for his lifetime service to scouting. Ferguson also served as chairman of the board to Bellarmine University, where he received an honorary doctorate.  

During his free time, he enjoyed traveling the world, reading, hunting, golfing and fine wines. He also collected stamps and donated his collection to the Boy Scouts of America.

Ferguson is survived by his wife, Barbara Cobb Ferguson; sons Bruce Ferguson and his wife, Barbara, Scott Ferguson and his wife, Jane, and Sutart and his wife, Jennifer; brothers Tom and his wife, Joanne, and Craig and his wife, Linda; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his foster brother, Peter Bodick.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Lincoln Heritage Council of the Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 36273 Louisville, KY 40233. Memorial services will be held this weekend in Kentucky.
