The school on Newfield Avenue had been closed to students and staff earlier while the source of a strong odor was investigated, according to a statement from Stamford Public Schools. The odor was determined to be the result of a spilled cleaning liquid.

One employee was transported to Stamford Hospital as a precautionary measure and was expected to be released.

Students either remained on buses or waited at the neighboring Greek Orthodox Church during the investigation, the statement said.

"SPS thanks all who helped to resolve this matter in a timely and safe manner, especially Stamford Police Department, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel," the statement said.

The building is now safe for occupancy, the statement said.
