Albert Ayres of Stamford, WWII Vet

A Mass was held Jan. 10 for Albert Ayres, a World War II veteran who lived in Stamford more than 59 years. Ayres died Jan. 5 at the Richard Rosenthal Hospice Center in Stamford.

Ayres was born and raised in Greenwich, and was a graduate of Greenwich High School, later earning a business administration degree from Iona College. He enlisted in the military and served  in the 1305th Army Air Force Base Unit in the China-Burma-India theater of operations.

Ayres began his civilian career at Coca Cola. He later became secretary and treasurer of the Canada Dry Bottling Co. of Stamford. He then went on to work for the Pepsi Cola Division of PepsiCo, retiring as a senior financial analyst.

He was a member of the National Association of Accountants and the Senior Men’s Club, through which he volunteered at St. Leo Church. Additionally, he was a member of the St. Leo’s organization Seniors Living Socially. He was selected to be honored for his military service, along with about 100 other World War II veterans, during the American Warrior “Day of Honor” in Washington, D.C. His joys included reading, gardening, traveling with wife, Patricia, and attending their grandchildren’s arts and sports events.

Ayres is survived by his wife, to whom he was married for 58 years; their daughters Melissa Elias and her husband, John, of Madison, N.J., Pamela Vieser and her husband, Walter, of Columbia, Md., and Stephanie Dumas and her husband, Jeffrey, of Easton, and eight grandchildren. Ayres was predeceased by his sisters, Anne Ayres Pennella and Mary Ayres Boyer.
