The Connecticut AFL-CIO is backing Dan Malloy for governor, giving the former Stamford mayor his first major endorsement since winning the state's Democratic primary election last week.
The labor organization also endorsed Richard Blumenthal for U.S. Senate, as well as several U.S. House of Representatives candidates and dozens of candidates running for Connecticut General Assembly seats. The endorsements were made Tuesday in Hartford at the organization's eighth Biennial Convention.
"This election is extremely important because the economic crisis in this country is putting the American dream in jeopardy," Connecticut AFL-CIO President John Olsen said on the organization's website. "The convention energized union members and gave them a sense of purpose and resolve to make a difference in the lives of their fellow union members and families."
Malloy and Blumenthal spoke at the convention. Malloy's opponent, Republican Tom Foley, also addressed AFL-CIO delegates. Outgoing U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., spoke as well. Linda McMahon, the Republican Party's nominee and Blumenthal's rival for Dodd's Senate seat, "was invited but did not attend," according to the Connecticut AFL-CIO website.
The website said delegates endorsed candidates "who pledged or who have demonstrated commitment to fighting for good, fair, safe jobs, to restoring workers' freedom to form unions and bargain collectively and to protecting the interests of working families."
