90 Secure Employment at Grocery Job Fair

Scores of area residents walked away happy Thursday after attending a job fair and getting hired on the spot. The fair was held for positions at Fairway Market, which will open a Stamford store in November.

Up to 500 jobs will be available, said Jacqueline Donovan, the company's marketing head. Fairway already has stores in New York and New Jersey. This will be its first Connecticut site.

"Ninety people got hired yesterday," said Phillip McKain, president and CEO of CTE Inc., which prescreened applicants. "We had a number of people who showed up for it. More than 180 were scheduled for an appointment."

Most applicants were from Stamford and surrounding towns, but "a handful" were from areas such as Bridgeport and Westchester County, N.Y, said Treva Franks, CTE's director of workforce development.

Of the 90 who received and accepted job offers, nearly all will begin orientation next week. Two will actually start working within the next few days.

Additional fairs are in the works, said McKain, adding that hundreds of jobs remain available.

"We're going to do a follow-up in a couple of weeks, so there'll be ongoing job fairs for jobs to be filled."
