William Ryan, 86, Bank Executive of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – William Edward Ryan, a lifelong resident of Stamford, died May 23 at Stamford Hospital. He was 86.

He was born March 5, 1926, to Timothy Ryan and Anna Moffett Ryan. He was a graduate of Stamford High School and the American Institute of Banking. Ryan spent more than 40 years in the banking industry, retiring as senior vice president of the trust department at the Union Trust Co.

Ryan was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and a member of the Resurrection Guild. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a founding member of the Glenbrook Athletic Club. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice Murphy Ryan; a son, Kevin Ryan and wife Barbara of Stamford; two daughters, Kathleen Ryan Doherty and husband Jay of Morristown, N.J., and Alison Ryan Murphy of Wethersfield; two brothers, Timothy Ryan of Stamford and Michael Ryan of Darien; three sisters, Mary Misencik and husband  Michael of Stamford, Anna Adams and husband Robert of Fairfield, and Patricia McQuillen, of Shelton; and four grandchildren. Ryan was predeceased by two brothers, John and Edward Ryan; and a sister, Ellen Kennedy. 

Visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Stamford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia's Church in Stamford. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Cecilia's Capital Restoration Fund.
