Tim Daniels Specializes in Elder Care

Tim Daniels wants to make sure elders who need care receive the best. Senior Helpers, which operates out of Stamford and serves Fairfield and New Haven counties, works with families to ensure quality service, says Tim, who is president of the franchise company. "We have a companion homemaker and a certified nurse aide," he says, explaining that the latter can bathe, groom, dress and otherwise care for clients.

The care his company provides includes everything from light housekeeping and laundry to assisting clients with Alzheimer 's disease with live-in service. In fact, his company specializes in Alzheimer's care, as well as care for clients with severe arthritis and poor vision. Caregivers are specially trained in these areas, Daniels says. For example, they must know when to help and when the client prefers to act on his own.

Senior Helpers caregivers also work with families, says Daniels. "They can develop a trust with an adult son or adult daughter, and they can help out [with the elder client] during family events."

Daniels ensures quality care by going beyond the basic employee background checks, he says. "We also do psychological testing."

Daniels formed the company three years ago after a career as an IBM executive (he holds bachelor's degree in economics from Stanford University and received an MBA from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business). He utilized professional services skills honed at IBM, transferring them to his new company. Daniels also operates a Senior Helpers in both New York and New Jersey.

With a growing elder population, he's seen quite a need for services, he says. "The demand is pretty much the same as always–strong," he says. "Most of the elderly want to remain at home. They fear going to a nursing home. So the demand is always there."
