Stamford Temple Welcomes Newest Members

STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford’s Temple Sinai is celebrating Passover this year with several new adult members of the Jewish faith after six people made their B’Nai Mitzvah at the end of March, a statement from the temple said.

The honorees are Dr. Bill Hines, Beth Peters, Fran Schechter and Carol Ruth Shepherd of New Canaan; and Meryl Japha and Jarod Lojeck, both of Stamford. All got to stand on the Bimah and lead the community in prayer at the temple.

Each went through two years of preparation, which included learning how to read and speak Hebrew, musical trope and chanting, as well as examining their spirits, the statement said. Rabbi John Franken, Cantor Micah Morgovsky Rabbi Marc Disick and Fran Schechter led the group.

In addition to leading the ceremony, the honorees also got to wear their tallets, a prayer shawl worn across the shoulders, for the first time, the statement said. Each had a personal, significant message for its owner. Peters, an artist, created hers from a photograph she took during a trip to Israel.
