Stamford Police Seek Safe Start for New Year

Stamford police are preparing for an active night with New Year's Eve falling on a weekend and possibly bringing an increase in impaired driving.

"People should plan ahead to be safe and sober this weekend," said Capt. William Mullin, who heads the New Year's Eve planning for the City of Stamford. "Receiving a phone call at 3 a.m. from a family member asking for a ride is far better than receiving a knock on the door at 3 a.m. from a law enforcement officer."

Stamford police will add extra officers Friday night. There may be checkpoints set up, but that decision has not been made yet.

The Stamford Police Department has advice for revelers to consider before New Year's Eve:

• Plan ahead: Make sure you have a safe way home before hoisting a few to greet the arrival of 2011.

• If you observe a drunken driver, don't hesitate: call 911.

• If you see someone about to drive who has had too much to drink, make other travel arrangements for him or her.

• If you go out to celebrate, designate someone to skip the alcohol who will be the driver.
