Stamford Peruvians Celebrate Their Culture

STAMFORD, Conn. — If you visit the Stamford Government Center this week, you will become engulfed by the presence of Peruvian culture. In honor of Peruvian Independence Day on Thursday, July 28, the Peruvian American Community Center of Connecticut has decorated the lobby with handmade crafts and paintings from the South American nation.

They are made by the indigenous people of Peru, come from all over the country—including Machu Picchu—and reflect the different styles and use of colors in each region, according to Elvira Pileggi, director of culture and integration for the group.

The art display and sale will remain in the government center until Aug. 6. The Peruvian American Community Center will also have a dinner celebration Saturday night at the Sheraton Hotel in Stamford. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the heritage group’s website.

Independence Day in Peru is recognized on July 28. The Peruvian people declared independence from Spanish rule in 1821, according to the webstie 123IndependenceDay.com.
