Stamford Gym Preps People for Summer

Susan Lostaglio will be ready for beach season this year. She's been busy working out with personal trainer Cat Heitz at the Training Floor in Stamford. And it will probably get more crowded in the gym now that spring has sprung and the weather is getting warmer.

“Once the weather gets nice, you really see people coming in,” said Ray Boyd, owner of the Training Floor on Hope Street. In the Northeast, gym enrollments see a boost in April and May as people work off their winter weight and get ready for summer, Boyd says. People also like to get out of the house after being cooped up all winter long, he says.

When the weather is nice, Boyd and the other trainers move classes outside. And though the exercises may be the same, outdoor classes have a different feel, Boyd says. “It brings on another energy level,” he says.

Boyd has some tips for those starting to hit the gym or trying to get back in the groove of going. Moderation and consistency is key, says Boyd. You should go at your own pace and make exercise part of your daily routine. “Don’t try to get it all done in one day. It takes time,” he says.

He also suggests not working out alone. The Training Floor offers Boot Camp classes every morning that fill up with people that come in groups of two and three, Boyd says. “What we’re finding is people work out longer when they are with a friend."
