Stamford Family Walks for Children With Down's

STAMFORD, Conn. – Peter and Guisela Lombardo, their six children and their friends will take part in a charity event that’s close to their hearts on Sept. 24 – the annual Connecticut Down Syndrome Buddy Walk.

The Stamford family has gone to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison for the walk for the past five years – ever since their only daughter, Grace, was born with Down syndrome. But the disorder has not slowed Grace, who just started kindergarten at Springdale Elementary School.

“Grace turned 5 years old this April,” her aunt, Andreina Mailhot, said in an email, “and her personality has grown so much over the past 12 months. She truly has an independent spirit. Grace … continues to amaze us all!”

"She loves swimming, dancing and the color pink – her favorite food is pink cupcakes. And at her cousin Lauren’s wedding, she wore a pink dress while serving as a flower girl throwing petals of the same color,” Mailhot said, adding that Grace did “an amazing job” at the wedding.

Over the past five years, “Team Lombardo” has raised more than $60,000 for the Buddy Walk. The money goes to the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress, which helps enhance the quality of life of people with Down syndrome and their families.
