A daylong conference on recognizing and using the talents of people with developmental and other disabilities kicks off Thursday, April 28, at 8:30 a.m. at the University of Connecticut/Stamford.
The event is being called Building Welcoming Communities. It will show how accommodations designed to meet the needs of certain segments of the population have practical benefits for many more people.
Jack Pierpoint, the pioneer of person-centered planning for people with disabilities, and Lynda Kahn will be the facilitators. Former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele will be the luncheon speaker.
The conference is sponsored by Abilis in partnership with ARI of Connecticut. There is a $30 fee for registration and a boxed lunch prepared by Westhill High School's River Hill Cafe and assembled by participants in Abilis LIFE, the transition day program for young adults on the autism spectrum.
Abilis serves people of all ages in the Greenwich-Stamford area with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Based in Stamford, ARI of Connecticut enriches the lives of people with disabilities and their families by enabling them to achieve their fullest potential at home, at work and in the community.
