South African Ambassador To Speak In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. -- GenRe and the World Affairs Forum will host Ebrahim Rasool, the South Africa's ambassador to the United States, who will give a talk in Stamford that is free and open to the public.

The event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the General Reinsurance Corp. headquarters, 120 Long Ridge Road, across from Lord & Taylor.

Rasool has extensive experience in South African government, having led various departments such as Health, Welfare, Finance and Economic Development. As premier of the Western Cape Province, he took part in attracting $1 billion worth of foreign investment, creating the highest provincial economic growth rate.

For his contribution to South Africa, Rasool has received a number of leadership awards, such as the Visionary Leadership and Public Good Award from the World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists, the Award for Commitment and Leadership in Fight Against Crime from Business Against Crime, and the Foreign Direct Investment Africa Personality of the Year Award from the London Financial Times. Rasool is the 1998 recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights.

Rasool has a long history of involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle, starting in high school and including leadership in the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the African National Congress (ANC). He has spent time both in prison and under house arrest.
