Reps Give Tennis Champs a Hand

The Stamford Board of Representatives honored Westhill High School tennis champions Jon Petrini and Flash Hoyos Monday night with a Sense of the Board Resolution lauding their outstanding athleticism. The two, top singles players for their school, joined forces to win the State Class LL Boys Tennis Doubles Championship. Both students said they were elated about the win and the local honor.

"We were trying to work really hard and train and train," said Petrini. "It feels great that it all paid off in the end."

"It felt really good because I graduated this year and it was really exciting for me to win," said Hoyos. "I wanted to play doubles because I thought it would be a good experience. And it worked."

Accompanying the students at the meeting was their coach, Patrik Vician, who teamed Hoyos, a lefty, and the right-handed Petrini, and supervised their practices, which lasted up to four hours. Hoyos will attend UConn-Stamford in the fall. Petrini, who is entering his senior year at Westhill, has verbally committed to Quinnipiac University, where he plans to study sports medicine.
