Pair Pursues Different Mix as Managers

Dominick Yorfino Jr. and Frank DeAndrea know a thing or two about music. They should — they've been performing for decades. But about three years ago they made a change. They started a management company to steer their own careers and those of others.

"We were both approaching 50," said Yorfino, explaining the milestone birthday was a catalyst for actualizing a longtime plan. "It's something we just wanted to do."

Yorfino and DeAndrea established Sound City Music & Entertainment on Parker Avenue in Stamford. In addition to their own band, the company manages specialty bands such as '60's and oldies groups, DJs, clowns, magicians and other acts. Yorfino said they're different types of managers because they've been there.

"A lot of times management will take a musician and treat him or her like a piece of meat. Everybody who comes here will be treated fairly, like human beings and the professionals that they are," he said. "If you treat people who work for you well, you'll have loyal workers."

Treating workers well is one thing. Offering clients something unique is another.

"When you start any business, you always want to provide something nobody else is doing," DeAndrea said. He and Yorfino provide an in-house showcase area as their "something extra."

"People can watch the band they're thinking about booking in a private performance," Yorfino said. "They sit on the couch, and it's really more of a personal showcase." They also rent out rehearsal space at their facility.

And for acts looking for management, DeAndrea and Yorfino said they have three requirements.

"Professionalism, professionalism and professionalism," DeAndrea said. "We get one chance [with clients] and if you don't do it right the first time, you don't get a second chance."
