New Charity Meets Needs at Home

Americans are known for their generosity when it comes to relief efforts around the world. Now Stamford resident Angela Malizia is making sure area residents who want to channel their charitable support locally have the  opportunity. It’s why she established Backyard Humanitarian, which focuses on filling needs in the city of Stamford.

This evening, Stamford Toys is holding a benefit for Malizia’s organization. From 6:30 to 10 p.m., the store will donate a minimum of 10 percent of all purchases to BH. The fund-raiser will be repeated Nov. 29 and 30. Proceeds will provide coats and food for the area’s needy.

“We’re grateful to Stamford Toys for generously donating a portion of the proceeds from their holiday shopping nights,” said Malizia. “The money will go directly toward helping people stay warm this winter as well as fighting hunger, two very important causes we are focusing on right now.”

Stamford Toys owner Nick Tarzia was happy to help. “I’m a big supporter of local charities,” said the merchant, who added that his store constantly hosts fund-raisers for schools and nonprofits.

In the two months BH has been formally operating, community members, business owners and organizations have been “a very important part of our success,” said Malizia. “Our coat drive, which brought in about 600 coats from the Stamford community, would not have been possible without support of Mario's Professional Dry Cleaners. Also, we just collaborated with Stamford Youth Hockey by organizing a food drive and an adopt-a-family gift basket program.

“It’s been a heartwarming experience,” Malizia added, “to see so many people coming together to help others in need right here in Stamford.”

Stamford Toys is located at 970 High Ridge Road. For more information, call (203) 322-7786.
