STAMFORD, Conn.-- The city's volunteers that mentor local youths have been singled out for their service to the Stamford Public Education Foundation.

February is National Mentoring Month when the college, corporate and community volunteers are being recognized for their work with kids in the Stamford Public school system.

The Foundation serves nearly 750 students a year.

The honorees are:

  • Community Volunteer Award: Regan Downey
  • College Volunteer Award: Erin Ritz, Sacred Heart University
  • Commitment to Service Award: Synapse Group

Their services helps to "create a safe, motivational environment for their mentees and their commitment to the students deserves to be acknowledged,” said Cindy Newman, the Foundation's Programs Manager.

The Stamford Mentoring Program serves students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

At the elementary school level, students learn civic responsibility through community service and reflection.

Middle and high school students are paired with college and corporate mentors. They work together to establish goals, improve academic standing, become engaged in school activities, and prepare for their future.
