Mayor Pavia Proclaims Toys for Tots Month

Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia proclaimed December as Toys for Tots Month in a ceremony at the Government Center Friday.

“Toys for Tots started in 1947 when the Marine Corps saw the need to provide toys to children who would otherwise have no Christmas at all,” said the Mayor.

“That need is as great as ever, and today we celebrate this wonderful charity and the many veterans and volunteers who make it happen.”

Toys for Tots collects toys from all over the area and distributes them to social service agencies and churches in Stamford and Greenwich each holiday.

“We’ve collected about 3,000 toys this season since starting the collection in late October,” said George Ducanic of Stamford, who has been the coordinator of Toys for Tots for the past 19 years.

In Stamford, the Toys for Tots campaign is run by American Legion Post 3 and VFW Post 9617 in Springdale.
