Library Presents Reams of August Events

At a recent hula-hooping workshop at Ferguson Library's South End Branch in Stamford, 15-year-old Pamela Cevallos joined the friendly competition of youngsters, teens and adults spinning large hoops around waists, hips, legs and even necks.

That was just one of the many activities in which Pamela, a library volunteer, and others have participated this summer. And there's much more to come, as the library presents an array of events during the month of August. Following is a description of some activities.

There are two programs scheduled in conjunction with the Teen Summer Reading Club, "Make Waves@ the Library." An ice cream social and movie will be offered Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2 to 4 p.m. at the Main Branch on Broad Street. Two weeks later, on Aug. 18, the Harry Bennett Branch will present "Cupcake Creations." For this, teens will decorate their own cupcakes with provided materials. The event starts at 4:15 p.m. Registration is required for both programs.

The library is offering two mystery-genre films at UConn-Stamford's Jeremy Richard Library, a substitute location while the Ferguson undergoes renovations. "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo," a who-done-it directed by Niels Arden Oplev, will be screened Aug. 14 at 2 p.m., while "The Ghost Writer," starring Pierce Brosnan, will be shown Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

Several children's film will be shown in the Ferguson Main Branch's lower-level program room. They include "Finding Nemo" Aug. 6 and "Free Willy" Aug. 27, among others, at 2 p.m.

Additional children's events include arts and crafts, story time, music and games programs. Some programs require registration. To sign up or for more information, call (203) 351-8242.
