Emmanuel Doreste found himself surrounded by kids Saturday at the Ferguson Librarys Haitian Flag Day celebration at the South End Branch. And thats how he preferred it, hoping young people would embrace their Haitian roots and celebrate their heritage in America.
They can be proud to be American, and at the same time be proud to be Haitian, the Haitian Television Network executive producer said.
The children were not there just taking in what Doreste and other speakers said, they also participated. Highlights included Westhill High School student Christina Peltrop reading her poem expressing pride in her heritage, and a dance by the Haitian Childrens Club of the Eglise de lEpiphanie.
Dancers who took part in the celebration were Agnes Zephir, Ravin Finley, Jazmine Jean-Jacques, Jhislane Dorsainvil, and Denver Dorsainvil.
Haitian Flag Day is officially observed on May 18, but the national holiday is celebrated the entire week, HaitianTreasures.com says. The Haitian flag stands for pride, unity, and liberty. It was created following the Haitian Revolution, which ended slavery in the French colony and created an independent Haitian Republic.
Flag day is one of the most popular events in Haiti, Doreste said, explaining its importance to the people from his native country.
