Gusnova Brings Frozen Sweets to Stamford

Tucked away in a corner on Stamford Town Center's second floor, Miran Kwon is serving up frozen sweets at the new Gusnova Gelato. Within a few short weeks, Kwon is already seeing a batch of regular patrons and the warmest parts of summer still loom.

While Kwon can give you a rundown on the differences between the Italian delicacy and standard ice cream, don't ask her to pick a favorite flavor. She loves them all.

Tell us about Gusnova Gelato as a company.

We opened Gusnova Gelato's first store in Farmington at Westfarms Mall in August 2009. We just opened our second store here in the Stamford Town Center on April 21. Our goal is to try to give our customers at Gusnova Gelato a little happiness, delight and passion. We're also working on franchising for those who want to open a Gusnova Gelato.

What exactly is the difference between ice cream and gelato?

Ice cream is made with cream and has 14 percent fat and 229 calories per 4-ounce serving. Gelato has a butterfat content lower than ice cream, of 4 percent to 8 percent. Gelato also contains less air and the result is a product that is dense and creamy. Gelato has a warmer serving temperature, thus melting as soon as it goes into your mouth. It is all of these elements together that give gelato, an intense, clean perception of flavor. Gelato can be described as a “gourmet low-fat ice cream”.

Does Gusnova Gelato make its own product?

We make the gelato and sorbetto (sorbet) in each of our stores almost every day.

What is your favorite flavor?

I love all of the flavors especially lemon, kiwi, strawberry in sorbetto and gianduia (dark chocolate with hazelnut), pistachio, roasted almond, tiramisu and stracciatella!
